DIE VERMASSUNG DES ALLTAGS

Social housing - in the Netherlands they call it „Volkshuisvesting“, accommodation of the people - is a phenomenon of the industrial societies of discipline: It creates a provident surveillance by social politics, its floor plans rationalize the domestic realm of the nuclear family, it applies a centrally planned economy of serial production. It corresponds with an urbanism that distributes the various settings of the societies of discipline - factories, families, nursing homes, recreation, prisons - separately in space. The crisis of the societies of discipline at the moment of transition to information-age societies of control expresses itself in ever new reforms of the Dutch social housing apparatus – reforms that have changed, so far, rather its appearance than its mode of operation.
